A well-woman exam is important to screen for breast and gynecological cancers and to discuss any preventative and sexually transmitted disease screening. Starting at age 21, well-woman exams should be performed yearly. The well-woman exam includes a breast exam; and may include a pelvic exam to check for uterine or ovarian abnormalities and screen for cervical cancer with a Pap smear and possibly an HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) test . Other screening tests that may be ordered include: blood testing, a mammogram, bone density scan (DEXA), and/or a referral for colonoscopy. A well-woman exam does not include discussion and evaluation of new health problems. Please schedule a problem visit if you have new health concern so that an appropriate amount of time is allotted to fully evaluate your problem.
According to the Adolescent Wellness and Reproductive Education Foundation, all pre-teen girls should have a “well-girl” exam before the onset of puberty. This visit does not include an internal (pelvic) exam, but is an opportunity to discuss questions and concerns, as well as become informed on topics such as menstrual cycles, STDs and contraception. Internal examinations or pap testing are not necessary until age 21 unless there is a concern.

However, some women experience an increase in menstrual blood loss and dysmenorrhea. The progestin-releasing (Mirena) IUD can be used for 7 years. The progestin-releasing (Kyleena) IUD can be used for 5 years.
